Among the powers and functions granted to the Ministry of Peace by law are promoting comprehensive sustainable peace, fostering national reconciliation and unity, serving as a hub for intergovernmental relations within the federal system, and proactively preventing and managing conflicts. The Ministry is implementing a wide range of programs and activities that enable the effective fulfillment of these functions and responsibilities.

The Ministry of Peace, among the major duties assigned to it by proclamation, works to achieve comprehensive and lasting peace, foster national consensus and unity, serve as a center for federal system relations, and pre-emptively prevent and manage conflicts. It executes a wide range of tasks to properly fulfil these duties and responsibilities.The Ministry of Peace focuses on positive peace and works in collaboration and coordination with governmental and relevant non-governmental organizations to ensure that the concept of peace as a nation is instilled in the minds of the generation and that national consensus is developed.The work of peace is not a task that can be accomplished solely by a government institution. Just as the accumulation of every pebble forms a mountain, the work each of us does for peace, when combined, secures the peace of the nation. Peace has many owners; the work of peace requires the participation of the many. The greatest foundation for advancing Ethiopia forward is significantly elevating the role of the society in building lasting peace and national consensus. When an individual is at peace, the family will be at peace; the peace of the family extends to the community; and when the community is at peace, the country becomes peaceful.
